Throwback Thursday: Lisa Frank

Throwback Thursday

Have you ever wanted to experience acid without actually take drugs? Consider trying Lisa Frank!

I have a headache just looking at this.

I have a headache just looking at this.

In 1979, Lisa Frank founded her company at age 24 which kind of makes me wonder what the crap I’ve been doing with my life. The popularity of these products continues today but really crescendoed in the 90s because it was the closest elementary school kids could get to trying ecstasy at a rave. The bright artwork features technicolor animals on a variety of products like lunch boxes, toys, stickers, and school supplies.

This is the trapper keeper I had as a kid. Yes, I had friends. Not many, but some.

This is the trapper keeper I had as a kid.
Yes, I had friends.
Not many, but some.

Pretty much every girl I knew in elementary school had a shit ton (it’s a metric unit) of Lisa Frank products. I don’t know if we were all just entranced by the bright colors and kittens but whatever the reason, this was our jam. Now, I can’t really look at it for too long or it starts to hurt my eyes. And yet, it’s like a car accident–I don’t want to look at, and yet I find myself continuing to stare at neon koalas.

Also, Mila Kunis was in all the commercials.

Also, Mila Kunis was in all the commercials.

Most likely in response to the 90s nostalgia that fuels things like this column, an artist named Ariel Hart (whose name sounds like it belongs on a Lisa Frank trapper keeper) created a Lisa Frank tarot deck.

It looks exactly the way you think it would.

It looks exactly the way you’d expect.

I have no idea if this falls under the realm of copyright infringement or not, but if you click here you can download your very own Major Arcana deck for free.

Looks like an accurate rendering to me.

Looks like an accurate rendering to me.

Excuse me while I go have a very colorful nightmare.
